Cheaper bus fares for students, children and seniors

There is good news for some Rotorua bus users, with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council introducing fare concessions for the first time from July 1.

The concessions will be available to children, students and seniors.

BOPRC public transport committee chairman, Cr Lyall Thurston, says they want to increase patronage in an affordable way and make it equitable across the region.

“The Rotorua bus service currently charges a flat fare. In comparison, Tauranga offers a concession fare to children, students and seniors,” Cr Thurston says.

“This is a development that we felt was important to make available in Rotorua.”

“We are focused on delivering an improved public transport network which will encourage regional patronage growth.”

This change will see Smartride card fares in Rotorua drop from $1.89 to $1.34 for concession groups, although there will be a small increase to adult fares. Children under five will remain free.
