Buses and Services

In Tauranga and Rotorua, buses only stop at marked bus stops. When wishing to board the bus please signal as early as you can that you would like the bus to stop for you. When wanting to get off, please give the driver plenty of notice that you would the bus to stop at the next marked bus stop.

Bus services outside of Tauranga and Rotorua operate on a Hail-and-ride system. While waiting for the bus, please raise your arm to indicate that you would like the bus to stop for you. The driver will stop at the nearest safe place.

It helps, as it makes boarding quicker for the driver and journey time shorter for the other passengers. If not, please try and carry smaller amounts of money and avoid large notes. Drivers only carry a small amount of change.

Our buses only allow registered service dogs (with their owners).

You can take a pram on the bus but some buses have limited space for prams. Space is allocated on a first come, first served basis.

All of our Eastern Bay buses have bike racks for you to use, (and several Cityride Rotorua buses). Speak to your bus driver to find out more.  They are not yet available on Tauranga or on other rural services. Bikes are not allowed inside the bus.

Bus timetables are available on each route page, or you can call 0800 4 BAY BUS for help in working out your route. You can also use Journey Planner on most Tauranga and Rotorua routes, which uses Google Transit to plan your trip.

Timetables are reviewed every year or sooner if a significant issue has been identified.

All Bayhopper Tauranga and Cityride Rotorua urban buses are wheelchair accessible with super low floors and ramps.

We love taking groups out on our services but, unfortunately, we cannot guarantee or allocate seating. If you do require certainty, there are many reputable charter bus companies in Tauranga that can easily accommodate large groups.

Bus stops and bus shelters are managed by your local council. 

As long as your student ID is from a NZQA registered education provider (it has an NZQA number) we will accept it. Student discounts vary across the region.

Text Bus information is available in Tauranga and lets you find out what time the next three buses are due to arrive at a particular stop. Follow the instructions on the signs at each stop.
